New baby in the family

My sister's water broke at 3 this morning (our time). She's doing fine, 1 cm, 50% effaced, contractions aren't bad yet - but she's only 35 weeks. Sooooooooo.... if you could take a minute or two and send easy-labor vibes and mature-lungs-healthy-baby vibes her way, I'd appreciate it!

My folks have a noon flight out of NY, so here's hoping things are easy and relatively painless and that the baby waits to make her arrival until they get out to Washington (state).

Eeeeeeeeeeeeee! The baby's almost here!!!!!

Yay! A new baby!

Sending vibes and lighting a candle.

I have a few thoughts that might help. My little guy was born at 33 weeks and came out with flying colors. He spent 9 days in the NICU getting stronger, but never needed oxygen. I was able to get 2 doses of steroids in before he finally arrived, which supposedly helped with lung growth, and now he's a happy 4 month old.
That week or so we spent waiting while he was in the NICU was a tough one, particularly since they never give you any idea of how long you'll be in there. I at first spent every night sleeping in the hospital (alone) so I could feed Owen and try and get breastfeeding working. When I finally decided to go home at night it was incredibly difficult, though ultimately best for all of us (I had been crying almost nonstop except for the hour or so I could spend with him for feedings). I wish there had been more of a support network so I would have been able to make the right decision without feeling so guilty and scared.
My last thought is on breastfeeding. I didn't have nearly enough info on how to keep up my supply when the baby wasn't able to be with me all the time, and ultimately my milk never came in. In addition, since ours was so tiny we couldn't afford any weight loss. Breastfeeding seems to often be fairly difficult, so the more info she has the better. (I have no one great source - a Google search for breastfeeding preemies is a good place to start).
Sorry to go on and on... I wish your sister all the best!!

Hope everything is OK. Let us know. If the water breaks, that's all she wrote so I hope the baby's lungs are mature, too.

Marcus has strep throat. Yuck!

Love ya,
Shari

I live north of Boston, and I'm happily married to him - we met 15 years ago in high school in NY. I blogged at snazzykat.com for almost 6 years before deciding to make the switch to this domain in Dec 06.

I'm a mama! SleepydoodleLittle Samson Daniel was born on February 24th, 2006. Sammy was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He underwent his first open heart surgery at 4 days old and his second at 5 months old. He will need another surgery when he's between 2 and 3 years old. His mama and daddy, however, think he's absolutely perfect. You can read all about his birth here, or all about him on his site, baby samson.
