He's done

The doctor just came in to let us know he was all done. He's fine and we should be able to see him in about 45 minutes.

Of course, as soon as the door opened and I saw a white coat, I went into cautious panic mode. Here's how the beginning of the conversation went:

Hi, I'm Dr. So and so, I did the procedure on your son, I'm sorry -

And I panicked for a few seconds until she finished up with - I wasn't there to meet you beforehand.

HELLO! You NEVER start a conversation like this with "I'm sorry..."!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sammy's cardiologist came in to talk to us, told us Sammy's a great candidate for the Fontan - his pressures are great, his ballooned aorta is one of the best developed ballooned aortas they've seen, everything looks fantastic. They did have to coil off one collateral artery off the aorta, so it's iffy as to whether or not we get to go home today. They're currently applying pressure to the entrypoints, and once he's all settled, we get to go be there when he wakes.

Phew. Step 4 out of 5 in this journey done - Norwood, pre-Glenn cath, Glenn, pre-Fontan cath. Now, one more step ahead of us and hopefully the last one for a very, very long time.

WOOT! YAY! YEEHAW!

Oops, soory, I should keep the noise down in case Sammy's resting.

Quiet little dance while sitting here...
(hmm, darn, this chair is squeaky!)

Nerdy head bob thing so the chair won't squeak.

There!

I have been thinking of your family all night and day. I am very happy Sammy is doing well. Why do kids have to go through such things?!? I'm sure he'll be back to his old self very soon. Joy

Fantastic news - we'll keep the positive thoughts going until he's awake and with you guys!

Yay, Sam! I've been waiting for updates all morning! :)

So glad to hear things went well! :)

Hi, guys. My thoughts (all the way from Greece (I've been reading your posts since Sammy was born)) are with you. Hang in there. He's a little champ and he'll be just fine. I know it takes a lot of courage to go through all this (I have a nervous breakdown even when my little one gets a fever). Lots of kisses to that little wonder of yours. Hope you get home as soon as possible, ready for new moments of playful happiness.

Congrats! Thanks so much for the update. Aside from the I'm sorry, that's some of the best news that you could have heard.

Yay! I'm so glad it's done. But my goodness, someone should tell that doctor you start conversations like this: "everything is fine, your son is fine," not with an "I'm sorry!" It's wonderful news that he's such a good candidate for the Fontan. Now it's just time for everyone to rest before you can go home!

Woo hoo!

You guys need to teach Sammy how to do that "Duh, should've had a V8" forehead slap. The doc could have used one after his "sorry" delivery. The irony is it's probably something s/he says constantly in many benign situations, forgetting that in many cases it's one of the last words any patient or parent wants to hear uttered within those walls!

I'm a mama! SleepydoodleLittle Samson Daniel was born on February 24th, 2006. Sammy was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He underwent his first open heart surgery at 4 days old and his second at 5 months old. He will need another surgery when he's between 2 and 3 years old. His mama and daddy, however, think he's absolutely perfect. You can read all about his birth here, or all about him on his site, baby samson.
