Typical mommy blog post. And pbbbllllttt to those of you who don't like the term "mommy blog".

I'm getting nervous about winter and the months where I can't just scoop Sammy up and head to the park. I ran across Toddler, Toddler the other day and have already tried out a couple of their toddler activities, and I know I'll be poking around some more and accumulating an easy-to-access list to post on the fridge for those days when there's only so many towers we can build out of the couch cushions.

Making a messI'm pretty proud of how we spent the last hour - sitting on the kitchen floor with a few trays and bowls full of uncooked rice. We went fishing (counting the hidden goldfish crackers until we had found all five), made shakers by scooping the rice into cups and covering them, poured the rice until our hands were hidden, put the rice and goldfish into a colander and shook it until only the goldfish remained - things like that. Then I let him play with dry linguine, poking it through the holes of the colander - good fine motor skill practice. And really - a quick sweep (which he helped with!) and it was all done.

His language has really burst out of control the past few days. I was getting worried, since he was really only saying the first syllable of things. Now? Sentences! Phrases like they're nothing! It's so crazy to watch. Just before, he picked up a piece of linguine, held it to his chest and said, "I play gee!" (Gee=guitar). Then he put it to his mouth and said, "I play harmon!" He asked to brush his teeth. He listed everything Dora needed to do on the map: "Wawa. Tree. Valley. All done!" When he was done on the potty, he said, "Now wash hands!" And his favorite word? More. "More grape!" "More crah-kahs!"

He's just so much fun these days. Not that he ever wasn't, but I always wonder how he could possibly be anymore amazing - and then he just goes and does something more amazing and even more fun. I know I'm gushing, but really - this age is just incredible. I love finally getting insight into what's going on in his head, and I love watching him put it all together!

Great fun! I love reading these posts - since he's a year older to the day then mine, I love reading what we can look forward to.

I was just talking with a friend about how every age is my favorite age. I think this one is my favorite, and six months (or two weeks) later I think THIS one is my favorite.

It just keeps getting better and better.

I'm with you, I fear the winter because I can't just bring Dylan to the park or something. I'll certainly check out that toddler toddler site

There is something beautiful and indescribable about watching a child grow. They go from being a cute bubbly baby, to a self-sufficient (or some what) talking child. It is great that you can articulate what you see for the rest of us. Brings back great memories of watching the girls I nannyed for 8 years. I was able to see one of the girls from birth to 7 years old. It was such a honor watching them grow.

Mommy-hood rocks!

yay Sammy! :)

Winter can be a scary season with an active kid - Molly and I got a little house crazy...

Some suggestions - Natick Mall has a padded playscape at their food court - have mcdonald's and play! Check out your local rec and gyms - many have "free play" time for a small fee - the Winchester Rec has one that's a lifesaver - they just pull out all of the small kid gear and let them free play, plus an arts and crafts area. And they have coffee for moms. Together in Motion has something like that as well.

Once christmas is over - the mall is your friend! Go run in the empty hallways, play in the lego store, figure out which stores have train tables and visit. Our favorite - the kid's table at the Apple store. Pack a lunch, get some fries at the food court, and make a low budget day of it :)

Also- Jordan's in Reading - the liquid fireworks are very cool, the trapeze school is fun to watch, no kid can resist trying out all of the beds in the kid's room, and when you're hungry, there's richardson's ice cream or fuddrucker's. (Can you tell that I was pregnant last year when I compiled this list)

Also - if you haven't befriended your local library yet - they usually have great play areas, wonderful storytimes, and passes that make the science museum, the aquarium, the children's museum, and all sorts of other attractions cheap or free - so if you only go for an hour, big deal - you only paid $4!

Molly and I have a membership to Imagine that in Lawrence- give us a shout, and we'll meet you up there some afternoon after christmas! (she's having surgery in December and will be on the DL until after the new year...)

He sounds so precious, I love that age. I love your posts, they always make me think and feel.

He's adorable! You are such a good Mama.

So, Sammy doesn't try to eat the dry rice? It sounds like a really cool activity to try at our home someday.

I'm a mama! SleepydoodleLittle Samson Daniel was born on February 24th, 2006. Sammy was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He underwent his first open heart surgery at 4 days old and his second at 5 months old. He will need another surgery when he's between 2 and 3 years old. His mama and daddy, however, think he's absolutely perfect. You can read all about his birth here, or all about him on his site, baby samson.
