New Englanders, I need your help!

Hey New Englanders -

Jay and I decided that we need to take a little family vacation. Nothing fancy, just someplace not here, and someplace obviously kid-friendly. (I found the Wildflower Inn, which looks PERFECT, but sadly, is booked until forever. Maybe next year.)

It doesn't necessarily need to be a b&b that has it all, but I'd love recommendations of towns to visit with toddler things to do. Places to walk/easy hikes, good family-friendly restaurants, maybe a good playland or theme village or something for Sammy, etc.

Western MA, southern VT, Connecticut, RI, southern ME, up to mid-central NH...

Any suggestions?

UTAH!! There's TONS of kid-stuff here (hell, I think the average family size here is 11)... oh... you were just looking locally. Bummer! ;)

Come to me.
I am serious. Pick a weekend and come to Southern VT.
We have everything you need - highchair/boosters, pack n play or futon for Sammy - totally kid friendly
We have hiking, snowshoeing, skating, snowmobiling right out our door. We are also pretty close to outlet shopping in Manchester. It is also free - and I make pancakes.
Come visit!!!!!!!!!!

We had a great time here at Whit's End Campground and they were very kid friendly. They have cabins and lots of neat places for tents with really nice bathrooms and showers near by. There is a small river that you go in that is really nice. We took our dog and had great fun. I'm not much of an outdoorsy type and I had fun!

Are you planning on going now? We just got back from Bar Harbor/Acadia national park which is super cheap and beautiful this time of year but it would be a pretty far drive for you and it not overly kid friendly. hmm I'll keep thinking...if your going now though the weather will be a factor to keep in mind, it's pretty chilly up here in Maine at least until mid day.

i grew up in antrim, nh and we spent all our vacations at lake winnipesaukee- you know, laconia/weirs beach area. it was AWESOME then (may not have the same shine on it now). i still make the whole fam go to kellerhaus (http://www.kellerhaus.com/) when i visit my aunt in winnisquam and i must say, it still kind of rocks. :)

Hi-
The Wildflower in is beautiful. My grandmother has a house just a couple of miles away. Did you look into the Trapp Family Lodge in VT? I've never been there but it looks like fun.
Amy :)

I would say "STORYLAND!!!" but the season for that is probably over...I'll think about it and see if anything else comes to mind.

Look into Mystic, CT. They have a Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport. You could stop by Mystic Pizza (like in the Movie). Overall it is a great place.

My picks:

Shelburne, VT, North Conway, NH, Portland, ME, Quebec City, Quebec, Salem, MA

Stowe, VT. Can't beat Ben & Jerry's down the road, and there's lot of easy hikes. Also, Burlington's less than an hour a way and a really great city!

tanglewood in lenox, ma is a good time. also, off season newport, ri with holiday trimmings at the mansions might be nice... and mount agamenticus (spelling?) in york, maine is wicked fun for sledding during winter!!

I agree with Sarah. Mystic, CT is great for kids. With the boats and historical village and aquarium, it is a great weekend trip and not a bad ride. I also like Sturbridge, MA for the Old Village. It is similar to Old Bethpage Village on LI, but Sammy might have to be a little older to appreciate it.

I'm a mama! SleepydoodleLittle Samson Daniel was born on February 24th, 2006. Sammy was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He underwent his first open heart surgery at 4 days old and his second at 5 months old. He will need another surgery when he's between 2 and 3 years old. His mama and daddy, however, think he's absolutely perfect. You can read all about his birth here, or all about him on his site, baby samson.
